Travis County Chief Appraiser expects fewer tax protests in 2023.

Travis Central Appraisal District's Chief Appraiser, Marya Crigler, reported that there are no major increases in property values this year. She also expects that there will be fewer property tax protests than last year. This will come as a welcome relief, not just to Travis County residents but to the TCAD Appraisal Review Board which faced a record 167,869 tax protests last year after tax assessments skyrocketed by as much as 50%. The TCAD Board of Directors has also voted to reduce the number of Appraisal Review Board members by 40% for the 2023 protest cycle.

Personally, I hope that Chief Appraiser Crigler is wrong about the number of tax protests in 2023. Regardless of whether your assessment goes up or down, Travis County taxpayers who continue to protest their taxes may find the Appraisal Review Board is more willing to make substantial settlement offers in an attempt to reduce their workload.
